Our Mission

Kashrut that is genuine, accountable, and owned by the community.

Who We Are

Community Kashrut was established in 2015 by the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies and the Council of Orthodox Synagogues NSW to provide kosher certification and supervision that is genuinely owned by, and accountable to, the community it serves.

We're governed by a volunteer lay board appointed by the JBD and COS NSW, with halachic oversight from our Vaad HaRabonim. We're registered with the ACNC and follow JCA corporate governance guidelines. No one profits from running CK — every director gives their time, and the organisation exists solely to make trustworthy kosher food more accessible across NSW.

Since 2015, we've provided over 20,000 hours of paid work to mashgichim supervising kosher food across Sydney — supporting real livelihoods within the community while upholding the standards families rely on.

What Sets Us Apart

Our Story

In 2015, the NSW Jewish community commissioned an independent inquiry into kashrut governance. The Kashrut Commission of Inquiry found significant governance gaps in the existing system: lack of transparency, absence of community appointment, and insufficient accountability.

The incumbent authority declined to adopt the Commission's recommendations for reform. In response, the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies and the Council of Orthodox Synagogues NSW founded Community Kashrut to build the certification authority the community needed — one that operates with complete transparency, genuine community ownership, and genuine accountability.

Community Kashrut is that new entity. We've been fulfilling that mission since day one.
